This is the first book that I ever read that I think would actually be classified as a distopian plot. I have fond memories of reading it as a child. It had a bright orange cover and I can't even tell you how many times I read it. Way too many to count! It was my favorite. I was really excited to get to read it again as an adult. I'm pretty sure I liked it as much as an adult as I did as a child.I like everything about this book. I really like the characters. I like Eric and his village. I like the way they are able to make what they used to have or get along without the things they used to have. I like how they all stick together through everything. But their way of life changes overnight when they have visitors from the outside world that actually do have everything the world used to have.I like Nicole too. I like the way she has kind of a child like faith about things. She just believes the things she has been told are true. But when she discovers for herself that those things are wrong, she is able to turn from them and help others to create a better life for everyone.The plot of this one has plenty of action. There's bombs blowing things up, there's danger and violence and it pretty much keeps your mind engaged as it hops from one thing to the next. I like the way I'm able to picture what's happening in my mind and I like to imagine and wonder just what would happen if our world was like this. What would I do? How would I react to certain things?This is one of those books that I just want to jump into the plot and find out the answers to my questions. I would have to say it was one of the pivotal books for me that made me want to be a reader. Make sure you pick it up and see what you think!
Wouldn't be nice if crime, greed, dishonesty, etc., could be eliminated from society. However, enforcement is not the answer, because "the baby gets tossed out along with the wash water." Lund shows us such a society, and nicely portrays enforced utopia's diabolical side, something we all seem to instinctively know.The book is fast paced and exciting. Hard to put down. Sad when it's over. And a lot of fun.
This book has some great action elements to it. The author is good and making you guess what might happen next. I could really see this easily turned into a motion picture with a few updates to the technology, but by in large this story is that intriguing. I thought that the character development was perfect. Not too much and not so little that your demanding more. This story is about the most basic thing we all want, but all take for granted. That is the ability to make decisions for ourselves even if they are wrong choices. This freedom is fundamental and I like the author's approach to making drama out of that idea.
Fabulous, fabulous book. It follows other dystopian novels, but is not only clean of language and sexual content, it also speaks to the crucial ability of humans to exercise agency. Partway through the novel, the main character carves a bird whose arms are outstretched just at the moment of taking off in flight. The only thing holding the bird back is a chain around his ankle.
This could be the most interesting and exciting book I have ever listened to -- and that says a lot!!! It is well written, well researched with the notes at the end of the chapters. I have learned a world of knowledge about ancient Jewish cultural traditions, Roman traditions, etc. The telling of the New Testament stories is riveting. Anyone would enjoy this book!!! The narrator of the audio is probably the best I have ever heard, as well.
This is the second series I have read from Gerald Gund. It's another great series.
Most fabulous book I have ever read. I cannot say enough about this amazing author. He so inspired me I have since bought all his books and will read each series and share it with others!! thank you Mr. Gerald Lund and Amazon!!
This is an excellent novel based on the Four Gospels. Ironically, portraying fictional characters in the time of Christ makes the Bible stories more real. This is the third and final volume in the Kingdom & Crown series, and one should read Fishers of Men and Come Unto Me first to get to appreciate the characters and the fictionalized subplots.
