"Beloved author Joanne Bischof doesn't disappoint with her latest beautifully written, heartrending tale...a quick favorite for historical romance readers." (Elizabeth Byler Younts, author of The Solace of Water)
A tale of family, brotherhood, and the healing power of love
After the tragic death of her husband, Aven Norgaard is beckoned to give up her life in Norway to become a housekeeper in the rugged hills of 19th-century Appalachia. Upon arrival, she finds herself in the home of her late husband's cousins - three brothers who make a living by brewing hard cider on their 300 acre farm. Yet even as a stranger in a foreign land, Aven has hope to build a new life in this tight-knit family.
But her unassuming beauty disrupts the bond between the brothers. The youngest two both desire her hand, and Aven is caught in the middle, unsure where - and whether - to offer her affection. While Haakon is bold and passionate, it is Thor who casts the greatest spell upon her. Though Deaf, mute, and dependent on hard drink to cope with his silent pain, Thor possesses a sobering strength.
As autumn ushers in the apple harvest, the rift between Thor and Haakon deepens and Aven faces a choice that risks hearts. Will two brothers' longing for her quiet spirit tear apart a family? Can she find a tender belonging in this remote, rugged, and unfamiliar world?
A haunting tale of struggle and redemption, Sons of Blackbird Mountain is a portrait of grace in a world where the broken may find new life through the healing mercy of love.

I rarely leave reviews but I felt like if I did not review this novel I would be doing a huge disservice to any potential readers, the novel, and to the author. It’s rare to find a novel that touches me so deeply. I have read hundreds of books in my life and so very many of them were good, even great. They made me smile and she’s a tear, laugh out loud, and recommend it to someone else. Sons of Blackbird is so much more than that. I felt in my heart the fear and determination of Aven. Thor’s torture as he struggled with his addiction and his pure love for Aven. Not born out of lust but out of something so much deeper and lasting. I felt Haakon’s brokenness in the pit of my stomach and the lasting effects of what that brokenness did to him. The characters became a part of me. I felt like I knew them. That I would gladly pick apples in Thor’s orchard and have a heart to heart with Ida or Aven. The imagery this novel creates is of beauty and the ugly that hides in it but how light can help to heal that ugly. It speaks of the Grace of God who lives His children and longs for us to make the right choices but He is quick to forgive and lavish His love upon us. I can’t recommend this book enough! Please, if you have even the slightest interest in reading this book, go for it. You won’t be disappointed. My only regret is that I devoured it so quickly and have to wait for several months from rather next book!
This book has everything I've come to expect from a Joanna Bischof novel. Redemption, with gentleman truth, hope, and mercy. The entire story was enchanting. I loved the bond between brothers, the decided differences and similarities between Jordan, Thor, and Haakon. But it was Thor that stole the pages of my heart with his quiet, yet thunderous way. I love that he was written deaf. It was the main quality that made him so understanding. His Norwegian (and therefore Viking) ancestory have him his braw and ferocity. His faith gave him his quiet courage and the strength to overcome an addiction as damaging as the pain he desperately wanted freed from. His charm bonded Aven's heart to his own that made me smile, and at times feel his ache. It was very rewarding to the parts of the novel written from his perspective, giving the story a depth and of character all its own.I loved Aven's gentleman spirit, and the way she loved each person that called Norgaard farm home in a way that revealed more about the characters.More than once I found myself wishing I was burn at such a time, living such a life, having such a love.Another book to add to my "favorites" shelf. I highly anticipate the sequel.
5 stars- This had to be one of my favorite books so far this year. Joanne’s books get better and better. The depth of each of the characters in this story was amazing. Sometimes you read a story and you just instantly connect with the characters. They seem as though they are real people. This was just such a story for me. Plus, how could you not fall head over heels for Thor? Each character is unique and carries their own story of pain and their struggles to make the most of the life God has given them. From the first introduction of the Norgaard Brothers you get an instant understanding of the character of each and their place in the family. My heart ached for both Haakon and Thor in so many different ways. They are two extremely different brothers that long to be loved and accepted. And Aven is also an amazing woman. In fact, this story is full of amazing women.I loved reading the story from Thor’s perspective. I applaud the author for introducing us to a deaf character & bringing the hearing world into Thor’s silent one. The author did an amazing job trying to capture life through his eyes. He was able to pick up on things that others missed because he relied on his sense of sight instead of hearing. This allowed him to read more deeply into the true feelings of those around him. This is a heart wrenching story that you will want to keep reading late into the night. I cannot wait to read the next story in this series & find out what happens next.I received a copy of this book for free. I was not required to post a positive review and the views and opinions expressed are my own.
I don’t often read stories based in the early 1800s, I usually need to be in the right mood or the subject must be SO COMPELLING I can’t put it down. Well, this story falls into the last category.I’ve not recently read nor even heard of a story where one of the main characters is a person who is deaf. This is what drew me into buying the book.Since I was in high school, I wanted to work with people who are deaf, to help them navigate through life. I had seen the movie and read the story of Helen Keller. Unfortunately, best-laid plans often didn’t turn out the way I wanted. Yet, while in college, I needed a foreign language and Sign Language was offered so I took it and it held me captivated. In this book, Joanne Bischof starts off sharing information regarding American Sign Language. I truly appreciated this, because it helped to understand, how and why she wrote the way she did, so we could better grasp the character of Thor. The way this author wrote, I felt the struggles he went through and experienced with the isolation he found himself in.This story was so well written and deeply moving. Not only did Thor struggle with deafness but he also struggled with alcoholism. There were also other issues the characters dealt with, that this author tackled. The subjects of loneliness, unworthiness, deep grief, racial differences, and unrequited love. This book has moments where you might want to scream at the characters and then cry because they are going through such tough stuff. It’s a book you won’t want to put down until you finish. It is a gripping story which will leave you hopeful of redemption, mercy, grace, and love.
