About the Author I was born in 1909, the fourth and youngest child of well-to-do, open-minded parents. They both came from an intellectual, non-practicing Protestant background, and were more interested in social and educational matters than in the spiritual movements of their period. Together they founded a progressive primary school and a society for infant health protection. I was eighteen and still at high school when my father’s sister, an active Theosophist and Star member, showed me books by Besant and Leadbeater which I found intellectually stimulating. When she gave me a booklet by Krishnamurti, I suddenly felt, “this is it.” In 1930, an “open day” was organized at Ommen and I was among the 1,000 who came from Amsterdam and the Hague to listen to Krishnamurti. The following year, I enrolled as a volunteer worker for the entire two months’ duration of the Camp. I attended all subsequent Camps up until the Second World War. In 1931, I met Bob Bouwman, a dynamic accountant, and his wife Ans. The young couple, who had heard Krishnamurti on the radio in 1929, had gone to Castle Eerde to offer their services. When asked what they could do for him, Krishnamurti answered: “Bring my books to the normal book trade, beyond this sectarian background.” I became one of their assistants and co-translated into Dutch Carlo Suarès’ and Lily Heber’s biography of Krishnamurti and the first booklets of Talks, which started to appear from 1931. In 1933, I abandoned my law studies and set up a small, progressive publishing firm together with the Bouwmans, financed by the latter’s accountancy income. The Nazi occupation of Holland changed the picture entirely. We were hiding Jewish friends, Bob Bouwman had returned to accountancy, and I was now the Star Publishing Trust agent. In 1967, new publishers took over the publication of Krishnamurti in Dutch, and they asked me to translate for them. My translations included: The Book of Life, Krishnamurti to Himself: His Last Journal, and Mary Lutyens’ The Life and Death of Krishnamurti. In Amsterdam, I had the unique experience of interpreting Krishnamurti’s talks simultaneously. With the passing of time, my fascination for Krishnamurti’s teaching has grown and matured. Especially important for me is the part his message will play for generations to come, for those, perhaps few, individuals in all walks of life who will be fascinated once they get to know the teaching…
