What is the nature of unidentified aerial phenomena? Forty years ago a small cadre of dedicated researchers began actively investigating cases, interviewing witnesses, and exchanging data through a small, informal network of international contacts. Today this low-profile network, or "invisible college," has grown into a larger, multi-nation volunteer research effort joined by many individuals. But the questions first raised 40 years ago remain current-and unanswered. "I believe that a powerful force has influenced the human race in the past and is again influencing it now. Does this force represent alien intervention, or does it originate entirely within human consciousness? This is the question that forms the basis of the work of the Invisible College of UFO researchers." -- Jacques Vallee "THE INVISIBLE COLLEGE is unlike any other UFO book ever written. Dr. Vallee questions what everybody else takes for granted, doubts what everybody believes, drenches us with data that doesn't 'fit' any of the theories of either the True Believers or the die-hard non-believers and then offers a hypothesis on his own." -- Robert Anton Wilson "An important book-not only are UFOs and psychic events inextricably linked, as Dr. Vallee so nicely points out, but neither can be understood without an appreciation of the role of myth, tradition, and belief system. Must reading for the serious student of contemporary events." -- Edgar Mitchell "Certainly one of the most interesting, thought-provoking books so far written on UFOs." -- Colin Wilson Dr. Jacques Vallee began his professional life as an astronomer at the Paris Observatory in 1961. While on the staff of the French Space Committee, he witnessed the destruction of the tracking tapes of unknown objects orbiting the earth, initiating a lifelong interest in the UFO phenomenon. Vallee arrived in the U.S. in 1962 and worked in astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin before receiving a Ph.D. in computer science from Northwestern University in 1967. There he became a close associate of J. Allen Hynek, then scientific consultant for the U.S. Air Force on Project Blue Book-the result was The Invisible College. Dr. Vallee is presently a venture capitalist living in San Francisco. His website is www.jacquesvallee.com.

Some writers on UFOs shy away from the most bizarre aspects of the phenomenon but this author sees the strange elements as a key to enhanced understanding (and I think he is right). Chapter five is especially valuable in that he categorizes types of sightings (a useful way of thinking about the topic that I've never seen elsewhere) and suggests, convincingly, that often when people disagree about the phenomenon they are actually thinking about different levels of the strangeness. The book contains a wealth of information and a profound analysis such that I will definitely re-read it, carefully, and recommend it to others.
This book was way ahead of its time in 1976, and remains so today. A troublesome fact about UFOs is the absurdity that the experience often is. Vallee takes this on head-on and talks about the sightings as something completely different from what we think. I would recommend it to anyone seriously interested in the subject. (OK the Uri Geller thing threw me a bit, but outside of that a fascinating book.)
I avoided this book thinking it to be too"old" to be relevant. I was wrong. His theory of UFOs as psychic phenomenon is as fresh now as it was then. Maybe more so, what with Quantum Physics and the probability that other dimensions re, indeed, real.
Follow up to Passport to Magnolia (read that book first). If you were intrigued by Passport, Vallee delves deeper in the possible purpose and mystery of the UFO phenomenon. A quick read with some interesting case studies.
This is a very interesting and thought-provoking book, presenting a substantially different perspective regarding U.F.O. phenomena. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in this topic.
Thought provoking and well written.
Fantastic and wonderful angle on an already complex topic mixed with fantasy and normally not science. I greatly appreciate this work and will read more from this author.
Very interesting viewpoint. Vallee highlights frequently reported paranormal features of UFO sightings and events with his theory that there is a control system that interacts with us. His analysis is insightful and thought provoking. As with all his books, this one is well written and thoroughly interesting to anyone who has an inquiring mind. He wrote this many years ago, but it is still timely and worth considering now. Anyone who looks at the broader picture of this subject and is familiar with the past and current literature can see that there is much more to the phenomenon than a purely physical aspect.
